K A Electrical is a well-established electrical contracting and solar EV installation business based in West Wales. Founded by Kieran Hughes nine years ago, the company has grown significantly, carving out a name in solar EV installations and general electrical work across the region. But as with any successful business, growth brought challenges—especially when it came to keeping track of everything from job details to invoicing. That's when Fergus entered the picture.
In the early days, Kieran managed the business like many tradespeople do: using bits of paper, notes, and the occasional photo. But as the workload grew, so did the challenges of tracking jobs and invoicing. "At the start of every business, you try and juggle everything on bits of paper, notes, and pictures, and then realise you need something better," Kieran says. The reality of this paper-based approach meant missing critical steps, with potential earnings sometimes slipping through the cracks. "The biggest thing is you forget to invoice people because there's no record," Kieran explains. "As soon as you finish the job and leave the site, if it's a small job, you might never invoice it."
That’s when Kieran started searching for a job management solution that could streamline operations, keep track of job details, and ensure nothing fell through the gaps. After trying other options including Tradify, K A Electrical eventually landed on Fergus, which proved to be a game-changer.
For Kieran, Tradify was a good starting point. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Tradify. It’s clean, it’s simple, and for starting off, it does the job,” he notes. But as the business scaled, K A Electrical needed something that could offer a bit more—a system that could provide “that professional edge” and robust features that Tradify lacked.
With Fergus, Kieran and his team quickly saw the difference. Fergus’s centralised dashboard allowed them to see what jobs were pending, what needed invoicing, and where the team needed to follow up. “Fergus has helped us keep everything in one place and keep track of the jobs and the job cards,” says Kieran. One particularly valuable feature was the enquiries management tool, which directly links to their website and brings in new job requests automatically. This integration helped K A Electrical avoid errors and manage incoming work with ease. "It saves us taking down the wrong details," Kieran adds.
The Fergus dashboard also became a valuable asset, giving Kieran a quick overview of the business. “The dashboard’s good for a quick glimpse of what’s going on,” he explains. Fergus's integration with supplier documents meant Kieran could attach invoices directly to job cards, streamlining cost management. Additionally, Fergus allows for seamless sharing of documents, including customer forms, with both staff and clients. "The app for the staff is great. It’s all in one place—everyone knows where it is," he adds.
One standout feature for Kieran was the ability to set up automated terms of trade that are sent whenever they email quotes or invoices. “As soon as you make contact, as soon as you’ve sent them an e-mail through Fergus... they get a copy of terms of trade, so it gives you protection straight away.” This added professionalism and legal protection was something K A Electrical found invaluable.
Today, K A Electrical has left paper trails in the past, with Fergus powering the business's day-to-day operations, improving team coordination, and making client interactions smoother and more professional. For Kieran, Fergus isn’t just job management software—it’s the backbone of his growing business in West Wales.
